March 11 (Bloomberg) — Copper prices gained on supply concerns after an earthquake struck Chile, the world’s biggest source of the metal.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit south of Santiago at about 9:40 a.m. New York time, the U.S. Geological Survey said today on its Web site. An 8.8-magnitude temblor, the world’s fifth- strongest in a century, killed more than 400 people on Feb. 27, briefly shut mines and prompted a three-day copper rally. Aftershocks have rocked the country for the past two weeks.

“Copper rose as a knee-jerk reaction to the earthquake,” said Frank McGhee, the head metals dealer at Integrated Brokerage LLC in Chicago. “The concern now is each time this happens, it causes an additional impact on roads and facilities. It creates an overall infrastructure problem.”

Copper futures for May delivery rose 0.9 cent, or 0.3 percent, to $3.377 a pound on the Comex in New York. The most- active contract has advanced 2.8 percent since Feb. 26.

The metal added as much as 0.8 percent today after initial reports put the quake, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southwest of Santiago in Libertador O’Higgins, at magnitude 7.2. The region, north of the Feb. 27 temblor’s epicenter, was hit by three tremors above magnitude 6 in less than an hour today.

Chile’s state-owned Codelco, the world’s biggest copper producer, evacuated its Ventanas smelter on Chile’s central coast after a tsunami warning. The Santiago-based company said there were no reports of problems at its El Teniente and Andina mines after the 6.9 quake, which shook buildings in the capital.

“It’s a classic case of shoot first and ask questions later,” said David Thurtell, an analyst at Citigroup Inc. in London. There is “always a risk that production might be affected,” he said.

On the London Metal Exchange, copper for delivery in three months climbed $24, or 0.3 percent, to $7,464 a metric ton ($3.39 a pound). Zinc, nickel, tin and lead fell. Aluminum gained.

Though Corey Feldman is deeply appreciative of the outpouring of condolences from his Hollywood peers following the death of his longtime friend, Corey Haim, he is also “angry, hurt and sad.”

Feldman made an appearance on “Larry King Live” Wednesday night to express his animosity against the industry that made him and Haim famous for classic ‘80s films such as “Lost Boys” and “License to Drive.”

Haim was 38 when he died Wednesday of an apparent accidental overdose.

“Where were all these people the last 10 years, the last 15 years, of Corey’s life,” Feldman, 38, asked. “Where were all these people to lend a handout, to reach out to him and say, you’re a legend, you’re an amazingly talented wonderful person who’s never really gone out of his way to hurt anyone, other than himself?”

“In this entertainment industry, in Hollywood, we build people up as children, we put them on pedestals, and then, when we decide they’re not marketable anymore, we walk away from them,” he added. “Then we taunt them and we tease them … It’s okay for society as a whole to poke fun at, to point fingers at, us as human beings. Why is it okay to kick somebody when they’re down? I don’t think it should be tolerated anymore.”

Feldman and Haim gained notable success as child stars, however as both actors grew older, they quickly faced the harsh reality that they were no longer marketable in the eyes of Hollywood.

They both struggled with drugs, but Feldman said, Haim had a tougher time getting sober. According to Feldman, when the late actor finally got his act together, “there was no one there to pull him up.”

Though he described Haim’s history of substance abuse as “long and detailed,” Feldman doesn’t want to jump to conclusions until the coroner’s report is released.

He said that Haim had recently begun seeing a treatment specialist and was taking new drugs that “might not have corresponded properly with the medications he was currently taking.”

Though plans for a funeral service have yet to be made, Feldman said that he and Haim’s family want to plan a “sizable memorial.”

“I would like to see Hollywood pay their respects,” he said. “Hopefully he’s going to be remembered as a beautiful, funny, enigmatic character who brought nothing but life and lights and entertainment and art to all of our lives.”

Despite all the inevitable hype about such an outing, Conan’s hoping to keep expectations low for the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.

“Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour,” the funnyman tweeted. “Go to http://www.teamcoco.com/ for tix. I repeat: It’s half-assed.”

On the site, he describes the outing as “a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence.”

The 30-city theater crawl kicks off on April 12 in Eugene, Ore., and makes a stop at Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester, Tenn., before winding down on June 14 in Atlanta. That leaves him with a little less than 12 weeks before that television gag order instituted by NBC is officially lifted.

A Mississippi school district cancelled a high school prom after a lesbian student demanded to wear a tuxedo to the event and bring her girlfriend.

In a memo that was sent to students on Feb. 5, the school district laid out the criterias for bringing a date to the prom.

Itawamba County Agricultural High School senior Constance McMillen decided to fight the archaic school policy which requires senior prom dates to be of the opposite sex.

It is alleged that the district told McMillen that she was allowed to come to the dance but she and her girlfriend were not allowed to arrive together, she would not be allowed to wear a tuxedo, and that she and her girlfriend might be asked to leave if their presence made any of the other students “uncomfortable.”

The American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi got involved with McMillen’s fight and asked the Itawamba County school district to change their policy and allow the 18-year-old to bring her girlfriend, who is also a high school student, to the prom but the district decided to cancel the event instead.

In a statement that was released last night, the Itawamba County School district said, “due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events,” they were cancelling the April 2, dance.

“It is our hope that private citizens will organize an even for the juniors and seniors,” the statement said.  “However, at this time we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students.

Itawamba County is a rural area with a population of about 23,000 people in North Mississippi near the Alabama state line.

I suggest that the good people of Itawamba County march down to that school district and stand up for McMillen…this is DISCRIMINATION!!!
